Jonathan Alpert, MD, PhD

Dr. Jonathan Alpert is Director Emeritus of the DCRP, and co-founder and co-director of the MGH Depression and Anxiety Associates Group Practice. He is currently the Dorothy and Marty Silverman University Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Professor of Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Pediatrics, at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Alpert received his BA summa cum laude from Yale College in philosophy and psychology, his MD from Yale University School of Medicine, and his PhD in behavioral pharmacology from the University of Cambridge (UK), where he was a Marshall Scholar. He completed residencies at Boston Children’s Hospital (pediatrics) and at McLean Hospital (psychiatry) before joining the DCRP in 1992. During his 24 years at MGH, he was the first incumbent of the Joyce R. Tedlow Chair in the field of depression studies. Dr. Alpert also served as associate chief of psychiatry, overseeing clinical outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services for the department of psychiatry. His Alpert’s academic interests include pharmacological and other innovative approaches to treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, depressive subtypes and biomarkers, drug metabolism and drug interactions, ethical issues in the design and conduct of human studies, and medical education. Dr. Alpert is author or co-author of more than 200 publications, and the recipient of many awards and honors, including Best Doctors in America, an individual Partners in Excellence Award in 2003 for leadership and innovation, an MGH Resident’s Award for psychopharmacology supervision in 2006 and 2008, a Nancy C.A. Roeske Award for medical student education from the American Psychiatric Association in 2007, and a Cynthia N. Kettyle Teaching Award from Harvard Medical School in 2008. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2009, received the MGH Psychiatry Clinical Mentoring Award in 2010, and a Partners in Excellence Award in 2014 for inpatient psychiatry care redesign.
